About This Report
At Loblaw Companies Limited (Loblaw) we are proud of our
responsible approach to business. As one of Canada’s leading
retailers, we have an opportunity to make a positive difference to
some of the pressing social and environmental challenges facing
Canadians. In this report, we share the progress we’re making
in the field of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and present
future goals.
This is our tenth annual CSR report.
It highlights our CSR performance in
corporate stores, distribution centres
and store support centres, as well
as initiatives related to our brands
and community giving efforts in both
corporate and franchised stores.
The scope of our reporting and the
data measurement methods applied
remain consistent with our 2015
CSR report. Unless otherwise
stated, all highlights are based on
2016 results. Where franchisee,
third-party, Arz, T&T Supermarkets
and Shoppers Drug Mart/Pharmaprix
Associate-owner information
has been included, it is indicated
as such.
All CSR plans and stated goals,
targets, objectives and results were
reviewed by members of Loblaw’s
,
Disclosure
Committee and Legal department.
In addition, our Internal Audit
Services department audited certain
targets and results included in
this report.

patterns are changing and formerly

frequency. The issues of climate
change and carbon reduction are
important to our customers,
our colleaguesand our company.
Human-made environmental
change is creating agrowing
array of risks; from abusiness
perspective, ithas implications
for economic sustainability.

Loblaw isoneof thecountry’s largest
energy users.We have a large fleet
of trucksandwe run facilities and
stores inalmost everycommunity in
Canada.We annuallyaccount for
approximately1,000,000 tonnesof
corporateCO
2
e emissions.As such,
webelievewehaveanobligation
tobepartof the solution to the
challengeposedbyclimatechange.
In 2016,we announced a
commitment to reduce our carbon
footprint 20%by 2020 and 30%by
2030 relative to a 2011baseline.
We have an actionplan focused
on energy-efficient stores and
distribution centres, fuel-efficient
transportation, andmanaging
refrigerant leaks and organicwaste
diversion.We intend todeliver
carbon reduction in linewith
Canada’s national targets and,
alongwith other forward-looking
Canadian companies,demonstrate
that thesegoals canbe achieved
without sacrificingeconomicgrowth.
As aproudCanadian company,we
want todo ourpart tobuild abetter
future for allCanadians.We also
firmlybelieve that indoublingdown
on our commitment to reduce
carbon emissions,we can
strengthen ourbusiness and lead
theway for other companies to
follow suit.
Ourefforts to reduceemissions
havebeenunderway for years. In
2011,we launcheda rangeof
carbon-reducing initiatives,andnow
we’regoingeven further,as that’s
what’s required.
Wearehappy to report that in2016
wecutourcarbonemissionsby3%
compared toour2015 results.

hashelped tomakeusmore
efficientandenabledus to reduce
costsandprovidebetter value to
ourcustomers.Byacceleratingour
efforts,weexpect to findmore
efficienciesandmore savings for
customers,allwhilemakingapositive
impactonour sharedenvironment.

continued tosupportcharitiesand
organizations focusedonwomen’s
health through its flagshipRun for
WOMENevent;andPresident’s
ChoiceChildren’sCharitycontinued
to raiseandgrant funds forchildren’s
health, increasingly turning its
support towardchildhoodhunger.
Inpartnershipwithcustomersand
suppliers,ourstoresandoperating
divisionscontinue to lead in
communitiesnationwide.Theyhave
significantlyexpandeddonationsof
perishables for foodbanksandmeal
programs,supportedneighbourhood
initiatives,andpitched inwhen
timesare toughest.Thiswasbest
illustratedby our response to the
FortMcMurray,Albertadisaster in
2016,whenwehelped raiseand
donate nearly$5millionbefore the
fireswere evenextinguished.
Finally,with regard toSourcing,
webecame evenmore thoughtful
about theproductswebuy and sell.
We advanced efforts to remove
ingredientsofconcern from foodand
householdproducts;we committed
tocertificationsand labels thatallow
customers tobuywith knowledge
and confidence;andwe increased
ouron-the-groundcapacity,
assessing thequality andpractices
at the facilities thatmake ourgoods.
Wedeepenedourengagement in
theAccordonFireandBuilding
Safety inBangladeshand, to
underlineourgrowing transparency,
wewillbeginpubliclyposting the
namesof factorieswherewedirectly
source JoeFreshappareland
footwearproducts.
Weaim tobea company that lives

measures forward, yearafter year.
